My new writing experiment is about dialogue -- that is, I'm writing dialogue only, hoping to fill in the rest later. I am so far not even sure what the characters names are. However, they have climbed a mountain, climbed down again, and had coffee.

I am allowed to add or remove lines later, if I want to.

That's a fun exercise! One thing it taught me was how much I tend to default to describing action instead of having the characters talk about it. I didn't really realise before just how much time authors normally make their characters spend talking about what they're going to do, what they're doing, and what they've just done. (My characters typically just shut up and do it...)

What I have noticed about my dialogue is that it looks completely pointless on it's own, but when I flesh it out, it still seems to fill some purpose. I just need the flesh in order to see it.

I am, in a way, hoping this can teach me to write dialogue that has a life of it's own.
