In a world where you don't have highly absorbent kitchen cloths, what do you do with a lot of water on the floor (from cleaning, for example).

This little problem announced itself to me yesterday, when we visited an eighteenth century farmhouse about an hour away. The owners showed us the little hole in the floor (living room now, not kitchen), where the water and all the dirt was swept down into the space below.

My Mum had a drain in the bathroom floor, and if I ever get to design a house, I wants one in every room where 'lots of water on the floor' is a possibility. When her washing machine broke and emptied itself all over the floor, it was a nuisance, rather than a 'flooding the neighbour's appartment' event.
